Many of you might remember two of Bellingham United FC’s more prominent players getting the chance of a lifetime to go play some soccer overseas with Bellingham’s partner team, VV Zwammerdam.  Brendan Quilici and Sean Connor had a very successful trip, even managing to get some time on the pitch during a few preseason games.

Now we find ourselves in June, smack dab in the middle of the PCSL season and this time our friends at VV Zwammerdam are returning the favor by sending over three of their young prospects to learn a little about what it’s like to be a Bellingham United FC Hammer.

The three teenagers, Nick van den Berg, Reijer Peters, and Thom de Bruin will be arriving stateside on June 20th and will be living the Yankee life for a whole month as they get in some training and possibly some playing time with Bellingham United’s reserve squad.
We are very much looking forward to this visit and thought this would be a great opportunity for you to get to know the guys a little before they get here.  Here are their bios.

Nick:
I’m Nick van den Berg, and I am 18 years old. I live in Zwammerdam, with my brother and parents. I’ve finished high school last year and right now I’m studying Civil Engineering at Technical University Delft. It’s my first year, so there are at least four more years to go. I chose this study, because I’m very interested in infrastructure (railroads, ports, bridges and buildings). After my study I prefer to work in this sector. During my study I work as a waiter in a restaurant in the neighbourhood.
One of my hobbies is playing soccer at VVZwammerdam, of course. In general I play as a midfielder in the second team. I play with the first team occasionally. I didn’t play all the time at VVZwammerdam, for a few years I went to Alphen aan den Rijn, and played there for a club called ‘Alphense Boys’. I’m also trainer of a junior team; the kids that play in this team are 9 or 10 years old. I enjoy more sports than just soccer. We go skiing or snowboarding for one or two weeks a year with my family. I like more indoor and outdoor sports, but there is not enough time to do them all.
Travelling is another thing that I like to do. I went with my parents several times to the USA for instance. We also did a lot of holidays by car in Europe.

Reijer:
My name is Reijer Peters, I am 18 years old, living in Zwammerdam with my brother, sister and parents. Nick and I are neighbours. Sean Connor stayed with us in March. It’s my last year at high school. After the summer I will go to University of Applied Science in Utrecht to study Economics & Management (MBA). During holidays I organize soccer clinics for VVZwammerdam and so I earn some money doing this. I’m now also studying for my taxi-drivers-license; it’s popular here for students to drive taxi during the weekends.
My hobbies are playing soccer and computer games (FIFA). I played for three years at the soccer high school in Alphen aan den Rijn. There I got my KNVBtrainers certificate. I also played six years for ARC (top division). I came back to VVZwammerdam to recover from the Osgood Schlatter disease (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001258.htm). I’m now free from any injuries for two years and that is a wonderful feeling. Nowadays I played for the first, second and junior-A-team (17-18 years) of VVZwammerdam. Just where they needed me: Left-wing-striker, left wing midfield and central midfield. I already played with Brendan and Sean in February this year together some matches and that was great.
In 2008 and 2009 I traveled with my parents to the USA (New York) and Canada (Vancouver). I’m really looking forward to meet Brendan and Sean again and I hope for a great experience and also hope to contribute to the quality of the B.U.F.C.-team(s).

Thom:
My name is Thom de Bruin, I am 17 years old. I live in Zwammerdam with my ‘little’ brother and parents. I’m on the same high school as Reijer in Alphen aan den Rijn and it is also my last year. After the summer I go to Business school IVA (automotive) at Driebergen (Near Utrecht).
During the weekends I work in a restaurant nearby my house to earn some money. Some holidays I also work at my father’s company; it’s a store for the farmers where they can buy/repair their tractors and machinery. I’m not sure if I want to follow-up my dad in his store in the future, I want to finish my school first.
I like soccer very much. I already started with soccer when I was five years old. As a soccer player I’m a striker, but sometimes the trainers put me in the midfield. No problem for me, I even prefer the midfield a little bit more sometimes. I played this season in the first and second squad. I also like a lot of other sports, including water sports such as kite (done once, it is ridiculously fun!) and windsurfing (official diploma on vacation).
I’ve never been to the United States before but I’m very excited for this trip, I’m counting down the days! I'm really looking forward to visiting the city of Bellingham and I hope to get playing time in the beautiful black & white B.U.F.C. colors!

So there you have it, as stated earlier, we are very excited to welcome these three footballers and hope that they will have a wonderful time here in Bellingham, WA.

Keep checking back in as we draw closer to their arrival, there are sure to be more updates.
